We encourage pupils and parents to travel to school by cycling, scooting and walking wherever possible. To help with this we are working with UK charity Sustrans to make sustainable and active travel easier for everyone. We have developed a School Travel Plan to inform parents and carers about sustainable travel to and from Aldrington and are a part of the National School Travel Awards and have achieved Modeshift STARS.

Walking Zones Map
In March 2024, Aldrington held an Active Travel to School Week and participated in the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge encouraging children to walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible for a week. Reception children took part in Learn to Ride sessions the week beforehand. These sessions gave an opportunity to children who could not yet ride a bike and taught cycle skills for those who could to increase their confidence and skills.

Bikeability
We run Bikeability cycle training at Aldrington for Year 6 children in which they not only better learn how to cycle but they also gain confidence on the road. More children cycling to school means less traffic on the roads thus reducing emissions and damage to the environment.
School Streets
Aldrington is part of Brighton and Hove' City Council's School Streets programme which addresses issues on the roads around schools at drop off and pick up times such as congestion, illegal or unsafe parking and air quality issues.
During term time no motor vehicles are allowed to enter Eridge Road on Monday to Friday from 8:15am to 9:15am and 2:45pm to 3:45pm. This helps to encourage active, sustainable travel to and from school which not only reduces issues related to traffic and parking near school entrances but also environmental issues.
