Eco Education & Sustainability
As a Christian school, we teach our pupils that we are created and loved by God, and that we have responsibilities to honour all of his creation and be good stewards of the world's resources.
We have an important role to play in reducing our environmental footprint to work towards net zero and giving children the knowledge and skills to thrive in the green economy and to help restore nature. We are delighted to share our half-termly Eco Newsletter giving Aldrington families a roundup of all that we have being doing in school related to Eco and as part of ‘Our City Our World’ initiative.
Aldrington's Climate Action Plan focuses on four key areas: Adaptation and Resilience, Biodiversity, Climate Change Education, and Decarbonisation. Key initiatives include:
- Embedding climate change education into the curriculum through lessons and collective worship to encourage behavioural change by the pupils to help the environment.
- Enhancing sustainability efforts through improved waste management (food waste, plastics) and the "reduce, reuse, recycle" strategy.
- Reducing energy usage by installing LED lighting across the school and children volunteers monitoring energy to ensure that we are keeping our classrooms warm, at 18'c, and turning off any unused electrical devices.
- Promoting biodiversity by creating habitats on site and in the Aldrington Allotment and improving air quality by encouraging more walking, scooting, or cycling to school, reducing reliance on cars and decreasing harmful emissions.
- Prioritising the purchase of used and/or energy-efficient items as a key strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable consumption.
These efforts aim to nurture a more sustainable community and prepare students to tackle environmental challenges.
