Royal Pavilion Visit

Year 2 had a fantastic day on our visit to Brighton Pavilion and the Volk's Railway. The day started with a talk from Lady Beatrice Buzzby of Burlington, Berkshire who told us what it was like to live in the time of King George IV. We then had a chance to explore the Pavilion and found out lots of fascinating facts; for example, did you know that the dome in the music room is made of 26,000 gold shell shapes? Once we had recharged our batteries with lunch in the Pavilion gardens, we had a ride on the Volk's Railway and an opportunity to enjoy the sunshine at Peter Pan Playground. The children had a great day and were a credit to the school.

The children each had a map so that they could follow the route which we had discussed in class. We went down Eridge Road, along Nevill Avenue and up Nevill Road. The children were amazing at spotting the different features on the journey including street names, road signs and buildings. They also used the compass rose to work out which direction they were travelling, using North, South, East, West and words like left/right/near/far. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring all our learning into the real world! Back at school we created our own maps of the local area.

Police Visit - Year 1

On Monday we had a visit from the Police with a police vehicle too. The children loved learning about how the Police don't just catch burglars, but they help to keep us safe too. We even got to sit in the car!
Some quotes from the children - "I sat in the front seat, touched the steering wheel and saw the lights go off!"

"They have these see through tubes to put evidence in for the courts"

"I got to sit in the back of the police car where the bad guys usually sit (but I'm not one) and there is a cage in the boot for if there are any bad guy animals!!"

One child came home and showed Mum a leaflet and mentioned the number to call if disturbed by bad guys. Another said that there were police at school today but not to worry as they didn't arrest anyone!

Victorian Day for Year 1

So on Friday 9th February 2024 we stepped back in time nearly 200 years and became Victorians for the day. Children came to school suitably decked out in Victorian attire in readiness for their day of chores and activities (polishing silver and brass ware, hand washing, polishing boots and shoes, beating rugs and ironing). Miss Coates was 'the lady of the house' and we were making sure everything was spic and span for her as well as preparing an afternoon tea for her and her guests! (We took great care not to get hair or dirt in the cucumber sandwiches!!!!). The children worked jolly hard all day and produced some lovely portraits of the Queen herself. After feasting on sandwiches and freshly squeezed orange juice because Miss Coates guests failed to arrive, the children went home with their wages held firmly in their grubby little hands! A great day of practical activities for the children to enjoy and endure!

Year 3 were First Aid Trained on 7th February. They learned how to do CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and each had a turn; how to put a friend into a recovery position to keep them safe until the arrival of the paramedic; and how to cope with burns, slings and other first aid difficulties. The children were amazing: listening closely, following guidance and becoming confident first aiders. They should now be more aware of how to help and to assist using those skills if the need arises. It's always handy to have more first aiders in the playground!

The Year 6 children had a trip down the road to Kings School to watch their dress rehearsal of Grimms Fairy Tales. I asked the children what they thought about it and what they liked most, these were some of their answers; "I liked that it wasn't boring, there was lots of action, everyone had a speaking role, there were no main actors ". They recalled Snow White and Little Red Cap being told. Another child said, "there were biscuits!!" and they loved the "dramatic deaths!". Another remembered and especially liked the busy scene with the seven dwarves, when one dwarf was in the spotlight, the others were all busy doing something else so kept his attention.

Reception had a very busy day on Monday! The children brought their teddy bears into school as part of our 'Bears' topic, and enjoyed making and eating honey sandwiches at their weekly forest school session. 'They taste delicious!' was the verdict from one happy child! The children also modelled their own clay bears whilst outside in the Spinney, taking care to think about all the different features of their bear. Later on, they came back into school in their pyjamas, with their teddies, for our Bedtime Stories event! Parents and carers joined the PoA for a cup of tea in the hall while the children found that their classroom had been transformed into a cosy den complete with fairy lights and multiple beanbags. We all had a wonderful time sharing teddy bear themed stories and songs together.

On Thursday 18th January, Hilary (co-founder) and Sarah (trustee) from New Growth Ministries, Zimbabwe, came into school to talk with all of the Year 2 to Year 6 children. The children had great Q&A sessions, asking questions and finding out more about the work of the charity NGM, their need for a new borehole to get clean water and how our money will pay for the machinery, pipes and power necessary to fulfil this need. Now the children are working out how they will raise our school target of £2,000 by July 2024! They have many ideas and it all sounds like lots of fun.
In the meantime, NGM have invited our school family to join in with their free Barn Dance, held at Bishop Hannington church – 6.30-9.30pm on Saturday 10th February. What a great way to start the half-term break!

Each week at lunchtime, they take those that want to go from the 2 classes that are allocated. The prayer space gives the children a safe place to explore faith in a culturally relevant way and so they can ask the big questions about life. This offers great opportunities to talk about values such as forgiveness and compassion through the stories and teachings of the Bible.

Neither side was daunted by the chilly English weather. The teamwork and formation practice of the Roman soldiers (not to mention their impressive shields and greater sword power) brought Boudicca to her knees, despite the valiant efforts of her woad-bedaubed army to repel the advance. Miss Reddick recounted Boudicca’s demise and the Roman soldiers cheered their victory. Year 3 have clearly learnt a great deal in this term’s topic.
Christmas Pudding Stir-Up Friday

It was so lovely welcoming all the parent and carer helpers into school this morning for our annual Christmas Pudding stir-up! The children enjoyed mixing up the ingredients with the helpers, before their traditional assembly in the school hall. The assembly involved the school councellors carrying in the stirred-up ingredients and placing it at the front of the hall. Curate Jan, from St Peter's West Blatchington, led the assembly and talked to the children about the different ingredients and how they link to the fruit of the holy Spirit.

There was singing, laughter and excitement as we all came together to celebrate this special season.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."

Artwork For Waitrose

In Art and Design the first half of this Autumn Term at Aldrington CE Primary School, Year 2 children focused on painting and colour mixing. They learned about Paul Signac who helped develop the painting technique Pointillism in which small, distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image. This tied into their topic on fire and ice. The Year 4 children developed their drawing and sketching techniques in learning about Frida Kahlo and drawing their own self-portraits with a focus on using water colours to create different tones and colours.
We are excited to share some of the children's artwork with the local community and thank Waitrose for giving us this opportunity by putting up some of our children's artwork in the cafe area.
Do pop in and have a look!

On Tuesday, Jesse and Poppy from Year 6 represented Aldrington at a special celebration of School Games, along with Miss Coates and Mr Miles. This event took place at Hove Cricket Ground where the mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Jackie O'Quinn presented us with our gold award. We also heard about what other schools have been doing to win their awards, including those who have maintained the gold standard for five years and earned the Platinum School Games Mark. This has set us a new challenge!

Year 3 Fishbourne Palace Trip

Year 3 had a really enjoyable day at Fishbourne Roman Palace, seeing and experiencing many aspects of Roman life. We learnt the incredible story of how Fishbourne was discovered in the 1960s. We were able to see the many treasures and artefacts that archaeologists uncovered there and walk amongst the incredible mosaic floors.
In our workshop with Sue, we experienced what it was like to cook in a Roman kitchen, write in the way Romans would have done, build mosaics, play games the Romans would have played and watch how a Roman prince and princess would have been dressed.
The weather was glorious so we enjoyed lunch outside and were able to explore the beautiful garden.
We are very grateful to the parent contributions and volunteers who made this trip possible, thank you!

They have so much green finger knowledge to pass onto the children which is valuable and appreciated. Here are some of the vegetables that have been grown recently. Courgette, carrots, tomatoes and tromboncinos. Some of the Year 1 children pulled up the carrots and potatoes today while visiting the allotment. They had a sunny, warm morning for digging.

Year 1 went on a walk around the local area as part of their Geography work.

This week, Year 5 have completed their inaugural 'Entrepreneur Week'. The children were given the challenge of designing a product or service that is innovative, realistic and creative. The children used their knowledge of computing, maths, English and PSHE to help them put together some fantastic business ideas. Every team rose to the challenge of negotiating, compromising and creativity with a positive attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit.

We had a range of ideas and designs, and it was clear that the teams had thought about their concepts in detail. Congratulations to the winning team 'EasyDog' for their idea for an APP that feeds pets when their owners are on holiday. A big thank you too to all the parents who helped judge the final!

New Playground!

Today we gathered the key stage 1 children for the cutting of the ribbon to our new and much anticipated playground and equipment. The children had a wonderful time exploring their new stomping ground and took turns having a go.
We chose Aldrington's youngest student to cut the ribbon and we look forward to officially dedicating the playground to much loved and missed Mrs Goodsell on Monday.

William, in Year 3, has been amazing: raising £500 for our local charity, Off the Fence, and running over 44 miles in just 40 days so that he can help the homeless people he has seen when walking around Brighton. We are so proud of him for seeing a need and taking action to help. What a superhero!

We enjoyed a rather breezy snack on the beach before going on our 'flight' to the heights! A thoroughly enjoyable morning and a huge well done to the children.

With great excitement and determination, we returned to the pool after having had great success at previous events. Between them, we brought back hoards of medals and an Aldrington record of 6 trophies, including trophies for overall winners for both the boys and the girls. We are very proud of every swimmer!

We were very excited about our trip to Washbrooks; even the rain couldn't dampen our spirits!!! We enjoyed a tractor and trailer ride, passing sheep and Highland Cattle. We stroked Giant Leopard tortoises, fluffy rabbits, gorgeous guinea pigs and a huge Shire horse. We learnt lots of facts about animals when we were in the barn.
Although it was still raining we had our lunch in the Barn and then played on the bikes and soft play. We had a fabulous day!!!

Year 4 had a brilliant time at Weald and Downlands Museum! We spent our day exploring houses from throughout history and tried to imagine what life would have been like for the people living in them. We particularly enjoyed immersing ourselves in Saxon culture, splitting wood to build Saxon houses and taking part in braiding competitions. A real highlight was the chance to make a Saxon herb ointment. It may not have cured our ailments but it sure gave us smooth, supple skin. A fantastic day had by all!

Year 2 rose to the challenge presented to them by Sir Mike of Lewes, the knight who visited them at the beginning of the term.... could they learn all about knights and acquire some of their skills in order to help him track down Princess Amelia?

On 'Squire Day', a culmination of three weeks of learning all about knights, they demonstrated skills in calligraphy, sword fighting, medieval dancing and food preparation. They learnt about shield design and proved they could behave with respect.

They also dressed up wonderfully... big thanks to the Year 2 parents and carers!

Year 5 were fortunate enough to spend a sunny day at Arundel Wetland Trust. The children thoroughly enjoyed seeing the wildlife and hearing the ongoing cacophony throughout the day. Our day was split into two sections. The first activity, Pond Detectives, went down a treat and everyone managed to catch and identify a range of water dwelling creatures (including a rather large dragonfly nymph). The second activity, Minibeast Safari, tested the capturing abilities of our students. They passed the test with flying colours and (with the help from our safari leader) were able to identify the insects. We thoroughly recommend Arundel Wetland Trust!

Year 4 Saxon Day

We were very relieved that, with some rearrangement due to COVID, our Year 4 children were still able to enjoy a Saxon workshop. There were focuses on the Saxons as both invaders – with their swords, shields and battle tactics – and as settlers, as the children built fences, learnt Saxon games and found out about how they lived and what they wore (which included dressing up Mr Miles). In class, the children are developing their writing using the dramatic story of Beowulf.

Year 2 Squire Day

Year 2 rose to the challenge presented to them by Sir Mike of Lewes, the knight who visited them at the beginning of the term.... could they learn all about knights and acquire some of their skills in order to help him track down Princess Amelia
We all really enjoyed the day, and when asked if they thought other children would enjoy Squire Day when they are in Year 2, the Year 2 children replied "Oh yes, definitely!"

They found out about the different eras of the period we call ‘Stone Age’ and how clothing varied in these different eras. The children also examined artefacts, looking for clues as to who they might have belonged to and what they would have been used for and identified animals from their skulls and skin.

The children carefully planned what their stalls were going to be, how they would execute them, along with all the preparation needed. They overcame many obstacles that came their way due to Covid regulations changing. The day itself they showed their caring and nurturing side, dealing with the younger ones so wonderfully, in fact the teachers all commented on this, that they were perfect examples to the other children and so inspiring! They raised approximately an incredible £1100!!! Amazing job Year 6!!

This week, we had the privilege of welcoming Simon Gale, the Chief Executive of the charity Just Life and Emily Kenward, Founder and CEO of Time To Talk Befriending to talk to the Year 6 children about what they do and how the money raised will help.
Emily talked about the importance of having a friend, they guessed the age of their oldest member (106!!) and how many people in Brighton and Hove who feel lonely most of the time (7000). Emily was moved by the way the children shared personal stories about older people in their lives and those no longer with us and also how much experience they have had with those in their 80's and 90's. Some said that because of what they heard, they would call a Grandparent or say hi and smile to an elderly neighbour as they know how much it will brighten their day.

Lizzi and the team at Off The Fence said it was such a joy to spend time with the classes. They were impressed with the children's enthusiasm, creativity and ability to work together to produce great final films!

A sparrow was spotted on the top of the new build hanging upside down with its wing out and stuck, so 'Operation Save The Bird' was put into place! We found the nearest window to the bird and carefully, using an extended pole, managed to hook under the very scared sparrow. A crash mat was put out for the 'landing site' where staff and children were stationed accordingly for the safety of everybody and bird involved! The sparrow was then taken to Roger's Wildlife Rescue in Woodingdean where it was confirmed that the bird had broken its leg and interestingly, the reason it had its wing out was to protect the broken limb. He had got himself tangled in his own nest materials. Roger will nurse him back to health and then release him back to nature.

Mental Awareness Week

During Mental Health Awareness Week 2021, we will pull together the evidence
that demonstrates the powerful benefits of nature for our mental health. We will
look at nature's unique ability to not only bring consolation in times of stress, but
also increase our creativity, empathy and a sense of wonder. It turns out that it is
not just being in nature but how we open ourselves up and interact with nature that
counts. We will show that even small contacts with nature can reduce feelings of
social isolation and be effective in protecting our mental health, and preventing
distress.
In school, the children will be focusing on nature in the weekly mental wellbeing assembly and will be participating in activities with their class outside.

What a wonderful array of Easter bonnets were on display at the Reception Easter Breakfast! The children sang joyfully and enjoyed their snacks from home as well as sampling some hot cross buns. We thought together about how the cross not only reminds us that Jesus died for us but goes 'up and down' to remind us that Jesus loves us and came down from heaven to be with us and 'across' to remind us that Jesus wants us to love and care for other people. The children heard about the monk who shared the first hot cross buns with those who would otherwise have gone hungry at Eastertime. That was around 700 years ago and hot cross buns have been enjoyed ever since!

MacMillan Cup

Usually, we award our MacMillan Cup at our special assemblies in Bishop Hannington Church, but instead, we are presenting our certificates in school, as we did last term. This Cup is awarded to one member of each class who has exemplified the qualities and values we look for in our children at Aldrington. The staff who work with each class talk together about who they would like to give the award to and you can see what each teacher has to say about the person they have chosen in this video.

The Kendrick Award for Sport March 2021

Congratulations to Nathaniel in Gorillas Class for being only the second person to receive the Kendrick Award for Sport for outstanding sportsmanship. This is what Mrs Carden had to say, "Nat has consistently tried his absolute best in PE lessons and whenever he represents the school. He is a natural athlete and Nat has represented school in a range of sports from swimming, football, athletics, cross country and achieved many medals in his time. He is also a really good sports person. So, he will cheer on his peers and his friends, he will coach them through PE lessons. If it is something new, he will give it a go. Well done, Nat for brilliant sportsmanship!"

Supporting Compassion in Indonesia

As the Summer approaches, we are thinking about our promise to Compassion UK, our international charity. A couple of years ago we promised to help them rebuild their small primary school in Blitar, Indonesia. The total cost was nearly £10000 but the local people raised £4600 and we promised to make up the difference (£5290). By Spring 2020, they had completed the building works, when we shared photos in a school assembly of the many improvements made: children now able to learn indoors in eight airy classrooms with windows, furniture and resources, away from the busy streets.

Our sports week has been filled with fun, determination and a few rain showers. We are so proud of the effort each one of you has made. You may not have run the fastest, or thrown the furthest, but if you did your best then you can be proud. You don't need to be like anyone else; God made you and loves you just the way you are. He doesn't expect you to be as strong as Samson who, the bible tells us, tore down a temple; or as brave as Esther when she stood up to the Persian King Xerxes. God made you and His love for you is not dependent on your achievements. He'll be there for you no matter what. Keep doing your best and let God do the rest.

Wind can be mysterious, even alarming! You can't see it, but you know it's there when it brushes your face or makes the leaves shake. And you can hear it coming as it howls through the trees. People can be like the wind sometimes. They change their direction - what they say and how they act - depending on what's happening around them and who's standing nearby. Do you do that? Do you say whatever other people want to hear? Or change the way you act - even doing something you know is wrong - just to fit in? Don't do that! God doesn't want you to change direction like the wind. Instead, stay strong for what you believe, stand up for what's right, and stand up for God. People may laugh or make fun or even worse. But remember that when God is on your side, no one can stand against you.

What an incredible and unexpected journey we have all been on this year. Although you may have enjoyed some aspects of homeschooling there will undoubtedly have been challenges. While enjoying more time with your family, you may, at times, have also felt lonely away from your friends. But be assured that throughout this voyage, you have never been alone. No matter how hard or long a journey may be, God is with you; right now, and always. In every step of life He guides you. Put your trust in God and He will steer you in the direction He always intended your life to go. Â
