Maths at Home

The key to successful home learning is encouragement and regular practice to help children to develop confidence and understanding. Maths should also feel easy, so that your child can experience success, with small steps to introduce your child to new concepts.

We follow the ‘Mastery’ approach at Aldrington, delivered through the White Rose Maths curriculum, which focuses on developing a deep understanding of maths through practical resources, visual representations and discussion before moving on to written methods. This means that some methods may look different from those you remember from school, but they are designed to help children understand maths more securely.

For home learning, we use several online platforms that support and reinforce what is taught in class. MyMaths is used in key stage two as a home learning platform and provides interactive lessons and activities that link directly to classroom learning. Children are encouraged to watch the lesson before completing the task, and parents can support by asking children to explain their thinking and praising effort as well as correct answers.

Times Tables Rock Stars can be used to help children practise their multiplication and division facts in a fun and motivating way. Regular short practice helps children become more fluent, which in turn supports their progress across all areas of maths. Parents can help by encouraging frequent use and celebrating improvement and perseverance.

In key stage one, we also use the White Rose Maths App, which offers short explanation videos and practice questions that match the White Rose scheme taught in school. This is particularly useful for revisiting learning or supporting children who need extra reinforcement. Watching the videos together and talking through the examples can help children build confidence.

Maths learning at home does not have to be limited to online activities. Everyday situations such as cooking, shopping, telling the time and playing games all provide valuable opportunities to practise maths skills in a meaningful way. Talking about how problems are solved and encouraging children to explain their thinking is especially helpful.
